Burmese Japan Yun lacquer nested lidded bowl set

Burmese Japan Yun lacquer nested lidded bowl set

This set consists of 3 nested lidded bowls of diminishing size.

This type of lacquerware is relatively new in Burma, beginning around the 1980s. It uses a technique introduced by U Tin Aye, head of the Government Lacquer School, who brought the technique to Burma, after studying it in Japan. Hence it is known as Japan Yun.

After initial layers of lacquer, gold powder in solution is applied to the outer surfaces, followed by a further layer of brown lacquer. Feathering actions are then used to create the attractive pattern.

Approx size:

Large: 10cm diameter, 8.5cm high

Medium: 9cm diameter, 6cm high

Small: 8cm diameter, 4.5cm high
